Established in 1948, CLRI is the world's largest and most comprehensive leather research institute. Operating under the Council of Scientific & Industrial Research (CSIR), we have been at the forefront of technological advancements, environmental solutions, and skill development for the global leather industry. Our campus in Chennai spans over 50 acres with state-of-the-art laboratories, pilot plants, and testing facilities.

Our Impact

CLRI's research has led to over 500 patented technologies, significantly reducing water consumption, chemical usage, and environmental pollution in leather processing. We have trained more than 50,000 professionals from over 60 countries. Our collaborations with industry giants and international research bodies have positioned India as a leader in sustainable leather manufacturing.

Zero Liquid Discharge (ZLD)

Pioneered advanced ZLD systems enabling tanneries to recycle 98% of wastewater, dramatically reducing freshwater consumption and environmental impact. Our technologies are implemented in over 300 tanneries across India.

Renewable Energy Integration

CLRI campus operates on 40% solar energy, with plans to increase to 70% by 2025. We assist tanneries in adopting solar thermal systems for process heat, reducing carbon footprint and energy costs.

Circular Economy Models

Developing technologies to convert tannery solid waste into valuable products like biogas, organic fertilizers, collagen peptides, and construction materials, creating additional revenue streams.
